The future paves the way for progress but penultimately, is it for human progress? Or for technological progress? In The Surge 2; the latter is true, in the world of The Surge humankind has almost been replaced by artificial intelligence; left to rot in unemployment as machines thrive. The Surge 2 is the sequel to the first installment of the series, combining souls-like gameplay with satisfying exoskeleton combat. With awesome melee weapons of course!
Who is the protagonist?
Unlike The Surge you won’t be playing as main character Warren this time around; but your own character, your own vessel which you will experience the story through. The Surge 2 has an all new character creator where you can create the protagonist that you want to play as, emphasizing that player choice will play a large role in the story. You can not only customise your character with their gender, hair etc but from the looks of things alter certain clothing to style them the way you want. It’s better to have a character looking stylish especially when mowing down some opponents.
The setting- welcome to Jericho City
The Surge 2 takes place in Jericho City, now under heavy quarantine; vast arraying alien-like entities —named “nanites”—shadow the sky; looming over the populace of Jericho. The city itself was an “upper class” city, comprising of breathtaking skyscrapers and wondrous natural areas of flora. The previous installment’s setting mainly focused on confined, industrial environments; there wasn’t a lot of diversity I had felt. The change with The Surge 2 is spectacular with so many different areas that encompass all types of environments. The Surge 2’s visuals and environmental design are flawless, making you feel as if you are really there and that you have a major part to play in the plot. Jericho city is a place which you will learn to traverse quickly through as it appears that the city will allow us to explore more openly around the areas. Jericho City is a fascinating setting and I am looking forward to exploring it inch by inch when I’m playing it myself.
The gameplay and combat- let’s dismember some enemies.
The Surge 2’s combat looks thrilling and a joy to control. Souls-like gameplay is very present here but Deck 13 puts their own spin on the formula. In combat players can target different body parts of their enemies and potentially slash and hack that part off which you don’t like on them. This not only gives a high level of satisfaction but an advantage to you in the battle as they may have one less way to damage you. You will have many powerful weapons to use paralleled with what looks like fluid defensive moves too. From what we’ve seen thus far there appears to be more control in how we move our character to react to enemies. For example in some of the gameplay we can see our character blocking in different directions then slicing the enemy before they have a chance to react. All of these additions will advance the experience of killing foes. Oh, and drones; killer drones. You will not only have your weapons to attack enemies with but little buddy drones that will do some of the hard work for you, more ranged weapons can be equipped to your drone so this insinuates that we can swap out equipment of the drones too. They will also offer you some company through this dangerous city which in my books is a good thing.
Enemies which we’ve seen so far all look phenomenal; from menacing robotic tentacled like machines to brutes that look ready to slice us into evenly cut separate parts. The enemies themselves are all going to be fiendishly difficult, we’ll need to learn each one intricately: their attack patterns, weaknesses, and how to defend against them. A part of an enemy may have a cloaking ability for example which will blur them from existence, so taking that part out will benefit you greatly. All of this creates a layer of complexity which is a welcome addition to The Surge 2. Speaking about defense, upgrading and crafting gear is also imperative to succeeding and surviving in Jericho City.
Upgrade successful, are you ready to kill with style?
In The Surge 2 simply killing enemies in certain ways can net you parts/electronics which you can make into gear and upgrade the equipment you have already worked hard to earn. This system ensures that we will always be encouraged to kill enemies for the gear too, not just for experience points; allowing us to perhaps progress through much tougher areas with the help of some stronger armor for example.
The Surge 2 releases on the 24th of September this year. Not a long time to wait! Arriving on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Time to unravel the mysteries of Jericho city and slay our way through. If there’s anything you’d like to ask me, feel free to do so in the comments.
Thank you very much for reading and as always, have a brilliant day!
